List of the most used terms in hotels and the hotel industry

Bathroom amenities
They are products, often with the name of the hotel on it, that you will find at your disposal in your bathroom. Most frequently, they are bath soap and shampoo. In the luxury hotels, it can be body lotions, accessories ( comb, bathing cap...).
The use of this products is free, contrary to the towel and bathrobes, that you can not take with you after your stay. Some hotels charge you such a practice.

Concierge service
It is a rather old term, borrowed to the traditional hotel industry. By concierge service, we designate a service from the hotel, which can make all kind of steps on behalf of the client. Thus, it can be from the reservation of a table in a restaurant, to the searching of a baby-sitter, via a plane ticket booking...
Today, the concierge service is provided by the reception but there are still some hotels in Paris which have a concierge service distinct from the reception.
The “chef concierge” is said to be the man with golden keys( referring to the needlepoint badge on the lapel of his jacket collar, which indicates that he belongs to the “Clefs d’Or” association).

Courtesy tray
It is a tray, nicely put at your disposal in your hotel room, on which you will find all you need to savour a hot drink, and a kettle.

Double (room)
An hotel room equipped with a large double bed, and which can accommodate 2 persons.

Junior suite
It is the same as a suite but smaller.


K like…

King size (bed)
A king size bed is a bed with a very big mattress. There is no official norm, but very often, it is said about a 180x200 cm big bed.

M like...

Mini bar
It is a refrigerated furniture which can be related to a mini fridge in which you can find cold, alcohol or not, drinks ; and sometimes some snacks (peanuts, chocolate bar...)
The consummations prices is often indicated inside the mini bar or on a sheet on the desk or the bedside table. The consumption of mini bar products will be charged by the hotel on your extras bill.


N like…

No-show
To book a room and not to come to the hotel the foretold arrival day, without having cancelled its reservation to the hotel before.
Making No-show often lays yourself open to see your 1st night charged by the hotel.


P like...

Pay TV
Movies on demand. It is a process which enables you to watch movies anytime you want. The movie visualization is charged by the hotel on your extras bill.


Q like…

Quadruple (rooms)
Hotel rooms that can accommodate 4 persons. The layout of the rooms can be 2 double beds or 1 double bed and 2 twin beds or 4 single beds.

Queen size (bed)
It is a bed larger than the normal size (140x200), but smaller than a King size bed. So, often, a queen size, in a hotel room, result in a 160x200 cm large bed.


R like…

Rack / Rackpri (price)
It is the public price, the price posted outside the hotel.

Room service
The hotel provides catering performances in your room. Concretely, your breakfast can be served in your room, as well as a refreshment or even a hot meal for the hotels offer that service.

Stars
The number of stars ( from 0 to 4 luxury stars for the tourism hotel in France) shows the rating accorded by the Tourism Ministry.
It reflects a part of the comfort you will find within the concerned building.

Single (room)
Hotel room with a bed for one person
But, more and more often, single is used to define the price for the room (for one person) than the size of the bed.

Suite
Hotel room composed of one or sevral bedsrooms and extra rooms like living room or office. Soem suite in luxuries hotel can rech a size of 100 m2.

Tourism tax
It is a tax decided by the municipality of the city where your hotel is located. Historically, this tax was implemented above all in the seasonal cities, for which tourism was an important resource, but not all year long.
The tax was determined by a fixed amount according to the number of stars, the amount being charged per day and per person. The hotel only collects this tax on behalf of the municipality.

Triple (room)
It is a hotel room, equipped with 3 beds, and so, which can accommodate 3 persons.
It can be organized with 3 single beds or 1 double bed and 1 single bed.

Turndown service
It is a performance provided in the luxury hotels and it consists in preparing the rooms for the next night. Concretely, it is the bed opening, the presence of a chocolate on the pillow and softened lights.


Twin (room)
A hotel room equipped with 2 single beds.
